Requiring only 6 ingredients, this festive tarte tatin is a total crowd pleaser! It features store bought rich and flaky puff pastry, Autumn Glory apples, and a luscious maple syrup and whisky caramel.

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1/2 stick unsalted vegan butter
  • 2 tbsp whisky or bourbon
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 4 Autumn Glory apples , peeled, quartered, and cored
  • 1 14 oz pack puffed pastry , thawed (I like to use Tenderflake)
  • all-purpose flour , for dusting

Recipe

  1. Step 1

Over medium-high heat, bring maple syrup to a boil in a 9-inch cast iron pan.

  2. Step 2

Add butter and melt. Stir in whisky, cinnamon, and salt. Cook for 2 minutes.

  3. Step 3

Decrease the heat to medium-low, arrange the apples in a circle and cook for 10 minutes, spooning some of the hot syrup onto the apples from time to time.

  4. Step 4

    Preheat the oven to 400ºF.

  5. Step 5

Dust a clean surface with flour and roll out the puff pastry into a 12-inch square.

  6. Step 6

Cut a circle of 12 inches wide out of it. Use your rolling pin to transfer the puff pastry onto the apples. Gently press down on the puff pastry, shaping it around the apples.

  7. Step 7

Poke it with a fork and bake for 20-25 minutes or until the puff pastry has puffed up and is golden brown.

  8. Step 8

Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 minutes, run a knife around the edges to loosen the puff pastry from the cast iron pan and carefully flip it onto a serving plate. Enjoy!

Common Questions & Swaps

If you want to use any other apples other than the Autumn Glory variety, I suggest opting for Fuji or Golden Delicious.

Although the holiday season is one of my favorite times of the year because of all the family gatherings, renewal of dedade-long traditions, and festive eats, sometimes, all the cooking involved can be a little overwhelming.

Most years, the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th of December are spent in the kitchen prepping the Christmas Eve dinner and the dozens of cookies my family eats throughout the holidays.

That’s why, when I can make a dessert that requires only six ingredients, takes under an hour to make, and is a crowd pleaser, my soul is happy!

When making this tarte tatin, I love carefully rolling out the puff pastry, making the luscious maple-whisky caramel, cooking down the apples and glazing them with the rich sauce.

My favorite part of the preparation process is the flipping of this pie. When I get to see the beautiful cooked apples sitting on a flaky, buttery and rich dough, glistening.

As you might be able to tell, the preparation process of this Luxurious Autumn Glory Tart Tatin is quite romantic.

I encourage you, as you make this pie, to really be present in the moment and savor the entire journey of bringing this pie from simple raw ingredients to a glorious celebration dessert.
